In Loving Memory of Stephen P. Burns
Stephen P. Burns, a cherished resident of West York, PA, peacefully departed this life on March 8th, 2025, at the remarkable age of 89.
Born and raised in the picturesque Watertown area of upstate New York, Steve exemplified dedication and service from a young age. Immediately after graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Marines, proudly serving his country during the Korean War—a testament to his unwavering spirit and commitment to duty.
In the early 1970s, Steve made the move to Pennsylvania, transitioning from a successful career with Carrier Corporation to join the United States Postal Service. Over the years, he distinguished himself as an arbitrator, covering a wide swath of the Northeastern United States, ultimately retiring as Post Master of the Red Lion Post Office. Following the passing of his beloved companion Genevieve, Steve returned to York to be closer to his children and embrace his golden years surrounded by family.
Steve’s zest for life was reflected in his myriad hobbies and passions. He was a devoted Beagle breeder, a talented bagpiper, and an enthusiastic fly fisherman. His love for the outdoors also extended to hunting, photography, and gardening, where he nurtured both plants and friendships. An avid pilot of radio-controlled planes, Steve found joy in weaving together his skills in bee farming and raising and training Portuguese Water Dogs. His creative talents shone brightly in knitting and crocheting, as he lovingly crafted beautiful Irish knit sweaters from wool he spun himself. Additionally, Steve was a passionate Ham Radio operator, connecting with others around the world.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Daniel and Leona (Green) Burns, his dear brother Jerome "Jerry" Burns, and his cherished companion Genevieve "Jenny" Edna Groves. Steve leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter through his three devoted children: Shannon Knorr and her husband Chris of Celina, TX; Kathryn Jones and her husband Monte of York, PA; and Sean Burns and his wife Kathie of Marysville, PA. He is also survived by his older brother and Irish twin, Leo Burns, and his wife Annell, who will carry his spirit forward.
A memorial service to honor Steve’s extraordinary life will be held this summer in the Watertown, NY area, inviting friends and family to share in the celebration of a remarkable man who touched the lives of many.
In our hearts, Steve will forever remain—a beacon of kindness, creativity, and love.
