Mrs. Pearl Winifred Jones-Quartey, 96, died peacefully on June 15, 2020 in Columbia, MD. Pearl was born on October 28, 1923 in Harlem, New York to Alwyn and Pearl Anita Bruce. Born during the Wall Street crash, “Winnie,” as she was fondly nicknamed, was sent, as a toddler, to live with her paternal grandparents in Trinidad. She returned to New York at age 11. Pearl attended Hunter College in New York City for her undergraduate degree in Sociology. She went on to complete her Master of Arts in Sociology and Social Welfare at Wayne State University, Detroit, in 1947. Pearl met the late K.A.B. Jones-Quartey in New York. They married in 1949 in England. After moving to Achimota College (renamed the University of Ghana) in the then Gold Coast, (now Ghana). Pearl and K.A.B. had four children. Pearl joined the University faculty lecturing undergraduate students in Sociology and Social Welfare Studies. She was the Warden of Volta Hall, the University’s women’s residence. Pearl returned to the US in 1977 working in various social work positions for the City of New York. She retired in October, 1993. She is survived by her sons, Kwatei, Nii Ofrang, Kwei Mensah, Kwatelai, her daughters-in-law, Elvira, Theodosia, Karin, her grandchildren Nigel (Naftali), Ian, Niklas, Markus, Lukas, her step-granddaughter, Kendra and her great-grandchildren Raya and Seema. A funeral is scheduled for June 25, 2020 at Mac Nabb Funeral Home, Catonsville, MD. Reverend Emmanuel Mercer will officiate the ceremony. Due to Covid-19, attendance is limited.
