April 22, 1932 — March 13, 2024

On Wednesday, March 13,2024, Norma King Schlegel, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away at the age of 91.

Norma was born on April 22, 1932, to Frankie (nee Borders) and Dewey King of Chapel Hill, NC. She earned a BA in Education from the University of North Carolina where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She earned a master’s degree from Towson State and taught school in Maryland for 30 years, retiring from Carroll Manor Elementary School in 1990. Norma’s first love was the Lord. She was a member of Chestnut Grove Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder and a deacon. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and was a member of the Chestnuts for many years.

Norma was a warm, kind, and loving person. She was committed to her family and friends in every way. She loved the arts, always taking her grandchildren and others to museums, symphonies, theaters, zoos, and aquariums. She also loved to travel, visiting many countries in Europe as well as Australia, Greece, Russia, Africa, Israel, among others. Norma loved the beach, traveling to the Outer Banks and beaches of NC—the pelicans were her favorite! Her hobbies included knitting, cross stitch, reading, and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She was an avid tennis player most of her life and a dedicated Carolina Tarheel fan.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Frankie and Dewey, and her husband, Andrew Schlegel. She is survived by her 6 children, Michael McGinty, Kevin McGinty (Margaret), Tricia Shellhamer (Ross), Andrew Schlegel (Maggie), Barbara Conner (Michael), and Susan Dunning (Pat), and her sister, Janelle Wall.
