Mildred “Millie” Hartley, an Avon Representative for nearly 60 years and life-long resident of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2021, at the age of 84. Millie is survived by her sister, Rita (Dembeck) Lisek and brother-in law Bernard Lisek, daughter Donna (Hartley) Hislop and son-in law Greg Hislop, and daughter Doreen Hartley and daughter-in law Diane Cooke. Also surviving are Millie’s five grandchildren – Carolyn Hislop, Eileen Jones (and husband Ian), Julie Hislop, (and fiance Todd Edmonds-Schrey), Patrick Hislop, and Bridget Hislop – and a great-granddaughter, Madeline Jones. Millie was born in Baltimore on July 22, 1937 to Thomas and Antoinette “Teenie” (Kulishek) Dembeck. She graduated from Catholic High School and remained devoted to her Catholic faith, attending Mass over the years at St. Wenceslaus, St. Lawrence, St. Gabriel, and most recently at St. William of York and St. Agnes. Millie loved to swim and was proud of the 20 laps a day that became her daily routine at Woodbridge Valley Swim Club and the Randallstown YMCA, a workout that continued until she became ill this August. She was a Weight Watcher for 48 years, but loved a good cup of coffee and home-cooked or restaurant meals, especially if they included salad or ice cream. In her later years she also became a fan of an occasional glass of sweet wine or a “girlie” drink. She thrived on serving her Avon customers and was rewarded with their friendship, and also by earning membership in Avon’s President’s Club for many decades. She loved her home, and felt very blessed to have been able to live there and maintain it until the end. She took excellent care of her flowers and plants. Although she was thrilled whenever she got to go to any beach destination, she was satisfied by simple pleasures such as driving herself to the Dollar Store or taking stale bread to feed the ducks at a nearby pond. She relaxed by soaking up the sun, and she treasured the company of good friends and family. Millie loved a good laugh. Laughter, along with her strong faith, attentive friends, and fierce determination, sustained her during challenging times. Visitation is planned for Thursday, September 9th, from 9:30 - 11am at St. William of York at the intersection of Cooks Lane and Baltimore National Pike in Baltimore. A Catholic Mass will follow at 11. (Please note: In compliance with Baltimore City COVID protocols for indoor gatherings, masks will be required.)
