Glyndon

Mildred Louise Daniel of Glyndon, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, aged 99 years old, a long life well lived.

Millie (as she was affectionately called) was born in Florence, Alabama on August 19, 1925, the daughter of Ethel (nee Ray) and William Henderson. When she was only 16 years old, she boarded a bus to Philadelphia to live with her sister, who, along with her father and brothers, had moved to Philadelphia seeking employment opportunities not available in northwest Alabama. This courageous move for such a young lady set her on a path away from the hardships of her childhood to a life filled with God’s blessings. Millie completed her GED and worked as a secretary in the Navy Yard, where she met Ensign Charles Daniel, a young career Naval officer. They married in 1948 and journeyed together for 63 years, living in California, Uruguay, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Maryland, ultimately retiring in Arizona, Charles’s home state. Millie became an excellent Navy wife, caring for their three children as they adjusted to new places inherent in military life, supporting their interest in music, art and dance, and serving her community, including as a scout troop leader and volunteer in hospitals and in other organizations. Later, her children having reached their teens, she worked as a valued assistant for local dentists helping establish their practices.

Always active throughout her life, Millie excelled at bowling, tennis, and golf, and also enjoyed family camping trips, gardening, and ocean cruising. She was an excellent seamstress, sewing clothes for her daughters and knitting beautiful afghans and sweaters for her family. Although having moved away as a teenager, she maintained connections with her family and old friends in her childhood home of Florence, Alabama and visited often with her sister Ruth.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Charles, her sister Ruth, and brothers, Howard and Joseph. Millie is survived by her loving family: daughters, Karen Daniel and Tami Daniel, son Robert Daniel and his wife Laramie, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Millie’s ashes will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery next to her husband. She will be missed and remembered with her family’s love and gratitude.
