Mary Charlotte “Charie” (Costello) Scranton, age 81, of Ellicott City, MD passed away on May 10, 2022 after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis and recent diagnosis of ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by family and her dear caregiver Lurleen Jones, in the comfort of her home. Charie was born in Catonsville, MD on December 25, 1940 daughter of the late James F. Costello and the late Margaret Gertrude (O’Ferrall) Costello. Her biological mother died when Charie was a child and she was raised by her second mom, Frances Loretta “Peco” (O’Ferrall) Costello. Charie was a 1958 graduate of Mount De Sales Academy and a 1961 graduate of Bon Secours School of Nursing, both in Baltimore, MD. She found her passion in nursing and motherhood. Her nursing career spanned several decades and included direct care and management in healthcare. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren and enjoyed following their many activities and accomplishments. Charie enjoyed her Bon Secours alumni board work and Leeds girls gatherings. She faced many challenges in her life, but found ways to enjoy the small things in life, like tending to her African violets, craft work, playing cards with Lurleen, or a good crab cake. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Stephen Costello and Jim Costello. Charie is survived by her three sons and step daughter, Robert Arthur Scranton and his wife Kathy, Richard Leit Scranton and his wife Stefanie, David Ames Scranton, and Angie Griffith Kennard and her husband Damon, and eleven grandchildren, Aidan, Hailey, Kyle, Alec and his wife Emily, Braden, Garrett, Emma, Sydney, Sierra, Soleil, and DJ. She is also survived by six siblings, Kathleen Sarkarati, Margaret Costello, John Timothy Costello and his wife, Julie, Joan Costello, Karen Smith and her husband, Blake, and Deborah Bourke and her husband, James and sisters-in-law Barbara Phelps Costello and Deborah Kirby Costello; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. The family will hold a visitation at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 3, 2022 at St. Mark Catholic Church, 30 Melvin Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at the church at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private at a later time. There will be a reception following the services at Kelsey’s Restaurant, 8480 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21043. Please join us in celebrating Charie’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Charie’s name to the MS Society, Mount De Sales Academy, Gilchrist Hospice, or your charity of choice.
