Ellicott City

Lloyd Michael Sloan, 77, of Ellicott City, MD, passed away peacefully at his home on January 8, following a battle with cancer.

Lloyd was born on July 13, 1947, to Rosemary Harrison Sloan and Theron Sloan at Bethesda Naval Hospital. He was raised in the Washington, DC, area in a home filled with love and extended family. Lloyd loved to reminisce about the many walks he took as a young boy with his grandfather to and from nearby playgrounds where Lloyd played little league baseball and his grandfather was his biggest and loudest cheerleader. After his family relocated to Maryland, Lloyd started a paper route, shoveled snowy driveways and did odd jobs to make money and save for college. He graduated from Northwestern High School in 1965 and went on to attend the University of Maryland, carrying a full-time load all while working a busy part-time job for the College of Engineering. About a year into his college career, Lloyd made what he would refer to later as one of the best decisions of his life and switched his major from Engineering to Computer Systems Management – an up-and-coming field in the early 70s.

After graduating from the University of Maryland, Lloyd served his country in the National Guard from 1970-1976, all while working for IT companies like Sterling Systems and Trawick Associates with people like Richard Yockman and Gene Hughes who would become his lifelong friends. Lloyd’s career spanned the DMV area, and he spent many long hours commuting in his Jetta or little silver Honda around the Washington Beltway. If you had occasion to encounter him on the road, you’d likely see him singing one of his favorite tunes at the top of his lungs as it played on the radio. Lloyd had a lifelong love of music.

In 2000, Lloyd co-founded Highland Technologies Services, Inc., together with Robert Carbo. In 2010 he decided to ease into retirement and consult part time for Rolling Bay so he could spend more time enjoying life, traveling with his wife Sandy, learning to play the guitar, and just being with family.

Lloyd started running as a young Dad and was a daily fixture in the Oakland Mills Community jogging his loops in all kinds of weather, sporting that familiar headband and those iconic too-short running shorts. He meticulously logged each and every mile and, when his jogging days were over, he walked and calculated that he had come oh so close to making one full trip around the Earth’s equator. Lloyd loved competitive sports and was a life-long fan of the Skins, Maryland Terps, Baltimore Ravens (unless they were playing the Skins), and Baltimore Orioles. He and Sandy liked nothing better than spending an afternoon taking in a baseball game and rooting for the Birds.

While his sons Mike and Ryan were growing up, Lloyd pursued another of his passions, coaching basketball for the Columbia Basketball Association (CBA). His involvement spanned 15 plus years, serving as a commissioner for the 8-9 league, coaching both boys’ rec teams and eventually moving on to coach the Jr. Jaguars and Cougars travel teams with fellow coaches Ed Morgan and Al Moraz, Sr. One of Lloyd’s biggest thrills was watching so many of the young boys he coached and mentored go on to compete on their high school basketball teams. He even had the chance to see Mike and several of his travel teammates go on to win the 1990 State Basketball Championship for Oakland Mills High School.

As the years went by, Lloyd also had the opportunity to watch the next generation – his five grandchildren - compete on local travel and high school teams in basketball, soccer, lacrosse and tennis, carrying on his great love of sports.

Lloyd is survived by his loving wife Sandra Peterson Sloan, sister Leslie Sloan Wildes, son Michael Sloan (Christy); Ryan Sloan (Renny); stepson Michael Shenk; and grandchildren Will Sloan, Molly Sloan, Reed Sloan, Trey Sloan and Nico Sloan; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Carol and Russ Bennett; niece Debbie Tayman (Allen), nephew Dan Dawes (Stacy), a great niece Kendall, great nephews Conner, Ben and Sam. He was preceded in death by his stepson Daniel Shenk. His marriage to Kathleen Sloan-Beard ended in divorce, but they remained friends till the end. A celebration of Lloyd’s life will be held at a future date.

The family suggests donations in Lloyd’s name to the Gilchrist Center of Howard County to help support their mission to provide compassionate end-of-life care.
