Joseph Kearney Burton (Kearney)

September 8, 1924 — October 13, 2021

On October 13, 2021; Joseph Kearney Burton (Kearney), a long-time resident of Riderwood Village, Silver Spring, MD, died peacefully in his sleep. Born in 1924 in Towner, CO, Joseph received Bachelor of Arts degrees in business and history from Loyola University of Maryland in 1944 at the age of 20. Upon graduating he was immediately commissioned into the Navy as an electronics technician stationed at the Naval Research Lab (NRL) in Washington, DC. After serving as a radar expert, flying to maintain systems for the Navy during the war in the Pacific, he was honorably discharged and married Dorothy (Dot) Eckhardt on November 27, 1947. He and Dorothy raised two children as he continued his work at NRL developing into an electronics engineer and eventually retiring in the early 1980’s. He then continued working as a consultant in his field. During these years and those after, he enjoyed family and traveling the world with Dot and his trusty camera. He loved good food, a nice glass of wine, and exploring investment opportunities. Although reticent to carry the conversation, he never shied away from a good political discussion. He was always active in the community wherever he settled, supporting local and national politicians and serving on the boards of civic and charitable organizations and HOAs. He is survived by his devoted daughter and son, Leslie Burton Fruscello (Thomas) and David Burton, as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren. There will be a celebration of his incredible life at a later date.
