Jean Helen Mattheiss

On Monday, April 12, 2021, Jean H. Mattheiss, 81, of Ellicott City, MD. passed peacefully after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Jean was born and raised in Baltimore, MD, graduated from Eastern High School (‘57), received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Juniata College (‘61) and from Loyola College (‘70). Her career in elementary education began with brief periods in New Jersey and in Dallas, TX. She finished her career with 30 years in Baltimore County as a reading specialist where she helped to institute a program of sign language as a reading strategy in the elementary schools. Jean enjoyed raising and showing boxers, sewing, gardening and traveling in her RV. Jean is survived by her brother, Bruce Mattheiss (Carolyn), her sister Sharyn Wegeler (Robert), several nieces and nephews, and her beloved spouse of 45 years, Mary Lou Carroll. A celebration of life will be planned in the future.
