Herbert H. Sprankle, Jr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at the age of 92. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret (Peggy) Sprankle, nee Sanders, his children, Ken (Reina), Mary (John Scavilla), Teresa (Ed Kostkowski), Pat (Lee Ann), Tom/TJ (Liz), Michelle (Michael Pelletier), 17 grandchildren, and another generation of great-grandchildren. Dad/Granddad was a loving, dedicated family man with a strong belief in God. His mantra was “God first, family second, me third.” He lived those beliefs every day. Our parents gifted us with many wonderful memories of noisy holidays, yearly vacations, "roughing-it" camping trips, leisurely Sunday drives, boisterous 4th of July cookouts (he loved the 4th of July in C-ville!), and plenty of love for us, our relatives, and the many friends who passed through the doors of our Catonsville home. A native of Maryland, Mr. Sprankle was employed by the Department of Defense from October 1964 to December 1989 when he retired. Prior to that, he served as a full-time Personnel Officer and Assistant Adjutant with the rank of Chief Warrant Office for the 729th Maintenance Battalion, Army National Guard from August 1952 to October 1964, and as a full-time Administrative Assistant for the 2nd Battalion, 175th Infantry, Army National Guard, for 4 years. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves from April 1977 to July 1981. His military service totaled 25 years. A long-time resident of Catonsville, Mr. Sprankle was active in many church and community activities. He served as a Eucharistic Minister, Cub Scout Leader, a delegate to the Parish Council at St. Mark Catholic Church in Catonsville and chaired or co-chaired the Welcoming committee and the Pro-Life Committee while participating in various parish fund-raising activities. A 1948 graduate of Mt. St. Joseph High School, he was exceedingly proud of the fact that his sons, nephews, and grandchildren carried on the Sprankle tradition at MSJ. He was a member of the 29th Division Association, the 729th Ordnance Reunion Association, and the South Rolling Road Community Association. Along with fellow Guardsmen, he worked tirelessly lobbying U.S. senators and congressmen/women to sponsor a bil to recognize the years served in the National Guard as federal service, a bill that was passed in 1990 as Public Law 101-530. Mr. Sprankle was predeceased by his parents, Herbert H. Sprankle, Sr and Bertha (Rosensteel) Sprankle, his brothers, J. Robert and Kenneth E. Sprankle and his sister-in-law, Patricia Sprankle. In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosemarie and Carl Amrhein and Elizabeth and James Diggs, both of Westminster, MD, and his sister-in-law, Eleanor Sprankle of Baltimore, MD. The Sprankle family is exceedingly grateful for the loving care provided by the Phyllis Angels Home Care Nursing agency. We know Dad lasted as long as he did because of the love, kindness, patience and care you shared with him. The mass celebrating our father will be held on Saturday, 30 July, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Ellicott City, MD, at 10 a.m. Donations can be made to Church of the Resurrection in Ellicott City, MD.
