George “Butchie” Allen, III went home to the Lord, February 24, 2025, after a brief illness. He is son of the late George Allen, Jr. and Doretha B. Allen. Butchie is a veteran of the US Air Force, an accomplished engineer and inventor, a beloved “Mr. Fix It,” and self-taught trumpet player.

In 1973, Butchie graduated in only three years from Springfield Trade High School, in Springfield, MA, in the Radio and Television Electronics shop. Butchie was an Sargent in the Springfield Cadets, an organization that taught young people in Springfield about military-style personal discipline and invested in their community. While on duty with the cadets, he was invited on stage by Godfather of Soul, James Brown, when he performed in Springfield. To serve his country, Butchie enlisted in the US Air Force in December 1973, earning a promotion to the rank of Sergeant as a SATCOM Operator/Repairman before his honorable discharge in 1979.

Butchie worked briefly for RCA (Radio Corporation of America) as a Missile Technician, tracking satellites for the Department of Defense. He worked for Bendix Field Corporation in 1982 working at the Goddard Spaceflight Center for NASA later becoming an instructor, one of the highest rankings.. After a stent in Iceland working for the Department of Defense, he obtained a position as a systems engineer with Maryland Department of Transportation, retiring in 2023. In his spare time invented the one-mold interlocking fastener among other things, and built and improved his own home computer from scratch. Butchie’s family and friends consulted him for his sound advice about buying a home, making renovations and investing our hard-earned money. As a self appointed coach, he has invested countless hours on teaching music, sports, electronics, and automotives to his children.

Butchie would come often to Springfield, MA to visit family, leaving us all better off than before he came. He diligently fixed and installed stairs, lights, cars, doors, you name it, he fixed it. Once Butchie fixed it you never had to worry about it again. He showed his love through gift giving, then he treated us all to dinner or some outing before returning to his home for the past 40 years in Baltimore, MD.

Butchie is pre-deceased by his brother, Anthony Lamont Allen. He is survived by his children, George (Lisa) Carter of Springfield, MA; Sparkle Allen, step-son, Donneil Raeburn, and his ex-wife, Carol Raeburn-Allen, all of Maryland. He is also survived by his siblings, brothers, Ward Allen of Springfield, MA, Reginald Allen of Kennesaw GA, and Eric Allen of Baltimore, MD; his sisters, Debra (Erwin) Driskell of Springfield, MA, Portia Allen of Enfield, CT and Joy Allen of Marlborough, MA. Butchie also leaves several cousins, nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great-grand niece and nephew.

Butchie’s was funny, generous, practical, provocative, and our lovable curmudgeon. He served his country and loved his family. Our family and his friends will miss him very, very much! May he rest in eternal peace.
