Dorothy Hoffman

January 13, 1932 — February 26, 2024

Dorothy Hoffman, who was born Dorothy Jean Mueller on January 13, 1932, entered into eternal rest on February 26, 2024. She married Carl L. Hoffman, Jr., on January 26, 1952; they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary shortly before Carl’s death on March 17, 2023. Dorothy is survived by her son, Michael, and his girlfriend, Andrea Baker; her daughter, Laurie, and her husband, Gregg Busey; her grandsons, Kevin, Adam, and Eric Busey; Carl’s sister, Marilyn Gay; her sister-in-law, Shirley (Moore) Mueller; her cousins, Carol Carew and Lloyd Musselman, and Lloyd’s wife, Nancy; and Carl’s cousin Harry Ryan and his wife, Elaine. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their children.


Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Otto and Sara Mueller; her sister, Audrey Green; her brothers, Joseph Mueller and Robert Mueller; her sister-in-law, Shirley (Baquol) Mueller; Carl’s sister Charlotte Meyers and her husband, John; her brother-in-law, Frank Gay; her aunt, Verna Musselman, and uncle, Melvin Newkirk, and their spouses; and beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews who were taken too soon.


Dorothy grew up in Westport, where she formed lifelong friendships with Ruth (Mills) Brandt and Ruth (Robinson) Sansbury. She graduated from Southern High School. Dorothy and Carl moved their family to Linthicum in 1963. Dorothy was an active member at Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church. In the early 1970’s, Dorothy returned to work as a secretary for Louis Bauermann’s State Farm Insurance agency in Woodlawn. In 1977, she began work as a Buyer’s Assistant in the Purchasing department at what was then Westinghouse. Dorothy retired in early 1992.


In 1999, Dorothy and Carl became residents of Charlestown Retirement Community, where they enjoyed the social interaction, special events, and enrichment opportunities offered in Independent Living. Dorothy became a resident in Charlestown’s skilled nursing facility in September 2020. Among other staff members, she formed a special bond with Nurse Thi; CMT’s Niya, Darlene, and Charles; Social Worker Becky; Unit Secretary Towanda; and Hospice Nurse Angie. The family would like to thank all of the Care Center employees and the staff of Gilchrist Hospice who provided care and support.


A memorial service for Dorothy will be held on Saturday, March 23rd, at 11:30 A.M., at Meadowridge Memorial Park. Donations may be made to the Charlestown Benevolent Care Fund at ccicharlestown.org, or to Gilchrist Hospice at www.gilchristcares.org/give.
