Daniel L Downey, Jr.

August 19, 1930 — March 14, 2021

Daniel L. Downey, Jr., of Catonsville, MD passed away peacefully on March14th. Dan was born in Philadelphia, PA, on August 19, 1930, the oldest of six children to the late Daniel L. Downey, Sr. and Mary Amanda Skelly Downey. He was predeceased by his wife of 61years, Mary Frances Kohlhepp Downey; his grandson, Thomas Daniel Scalfaro; and a brother, Thomas Downey. He is survived by their four daughters: Mary Kate Marshall (Matthew) of Rogers, AR; Jeannie Downey-Vanover (Edward) of Laytonsville, MD; Maureen Gilbert (James) of Ellicott City, MD; and Mollie Scalfaro (Anthony) of Lansdale, PA. Dan is also survived by his other grandchildren: Rebecca Vanover; Matthew (Lauren), Elizabeth, Joseph and Catherine Gilbert; Victoria, Anthony Jr. and Francis Scalfaro and siblings: Mary Lou Smith (Mac) of Pleasanton, CA, Paul Downey of Warrensburg, MO, Joseph Edward Downey (Mercedes) of Seville, Spain and Adele Gallo. Dan attended Siena College in upstate New York and what is now known as Loyola University Maryland. After college, he had a long rewarding career in truck sales for over 35 years. He began working for International Harvester in Baltimore, MD and later worked for Rollins Truck Leasing in Wilmington, DE. Dan was a longtime resident of Wilmington, DE where with Mary Frances, they raised their four daughters. They were members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Wilmington for more than 50 years. Dan enjoyed those years serving as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and Head of the Ushers. Dan was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a 52 year member of the Men of Malvern. Dan's hobbies included playing golf and collecting classic comic strips. While living at Maris Grove, in Glen Mills, PA, Dan and a friend hosted a television show on the in-house television station about the classic comics. Funeral services will be held at the St. Pius X Catholic Church, 6428 York Rd, Baltimore, MD 21212 , on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 10:00 am.
