Catherine June Nemec, affectionately known as June, Juney, Mom, and Mom-Mom, was the youngest child born to Joseph and Gloria Herpel on June 25, 1944. She grew up and spent most of her formative years at her mother’s restaurant on North Chester Street, where she attended St. Andrew’s and the Institute of Notre Dame. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings Marie Byrnes and Charles Summerson.
Always a jokester and looking for mischief, she found it with her lifelong friends Charlotte Russo and Arlene Christoper, almost always at June’s encouragement. She loved to dance, have fun, talk to whomever wanted to listen, and spend time with her loved ones. The Mispillion Road family also held a special place in her heart where she shared more than five decades of memories, laughter, and love.
Her love story with her husband August “Augie” started when they met at her softball game when she was just 15 years old. Upon his return from the Army, they were inseparable. They were married in June of 1968. June is survived by her loving husband, her two children Jennifer Gostomski (Ken) and August Nemec (Mary), adored grandchildren Faith Gostomski, Melissa Poole, Kristy Cox and Augie Nemec, great-grandsons Ethan Poole, Colin Poole and Aiden Cox, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She adored her family and could be found at every family function, every single baseball or soccer game, school functions, and wherever she found a place to share her love.
June dedicated her selfless life to providing care to others. Whether it was in her role as a family member or as a nurse for more than 20 years at St. Joseph’s Hospital, she was always trying to be of assistance. Ending every conversation, she would ask “Can I do something for you?” Whether it was folding laundry, making a meal, running an errand or just taking the time to listen to you, she made it a point to ensure that everyone felt her love. June made this world a better place and will be greatly missed by all.
Her funeral Mass will be held at the Church of the Annunciation (5212 McCormick Avenue, Rosedale, Maryland) at 11:00 AM on April 12, 2025 with her celebration of life to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to Gilchrist Hospice in June’s memory would be appreciated.
