August Gerhart Witte Jr.

June 21, 1944 — June 15, 2024

Gerry Witte passed away peacefully on June 15, 2024, surrounded by his two daughters, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 79.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jane D. Witte, in 2013. He is survived by many family members who loved him, including his sister, Sonia Witte Snavely, his two daughters, Jill K. Witte and Tricia H. Witte, and his five grandchildren: Julian Bond, Justin Bond, Caleb Scofield, Jacob Scofield, and Ada Scofield.

He was born on June 21, 1944, to August Gerhart Witte, Sr. and Helen Trone Witte in Columbia, Pennsylvania. Gerry graduated from Columbia High School in 1962, where he delivered a commencement speech and was inducted into the National Honor Society.

He earned degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Valparaiso University and Numerical Science from Johns Hopkins University and was a member of Tau Beta Pi. Gerry dedicated many years of his career to the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory where he managed a large team of engineers and researchers.

Gerry was a vital member of his community, taking a special interest in the Oakland Mills Village Open Space Committee, of which he was chairman. He was also active in his church, Columbia Baptist Fellowship, and treasured the wonderful friendships he formed along his life's journey.

Gerry was never too busy to lend a helping hand. He loved solving engineering and technical problems and was always eager to volunteer to help anyone with much-needed computer and cell phone set-ups, offering invaluable advice to those less tech-savvy. His unwavering devotion to his wife during her four-year battle with cancer exemplified his kindness and dedication.

Known for his daily 2.5-mile walks around the neighborhood, his love for cars, and his boundless knowledge of technology, Gerry's presence was felt by all who knew him. His kindness, devotion, and generosity touched many lives. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

There will be a memorial service on Friday, Aug. 2, 2024 at 4 p.m. at The Meeting House (Oakland Mills Interfaith Center) in Columbia, Maryland to honor and celebrate his life.
