Arlene Mae Walther, age 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 3, 2020, at Gilchrist Hospice in Columbia, MD. Born April 5, 1931, in St. Paul, MN, to the late Frederick E. and Lucille A. (Flipp) Schaefer, she later moved to Maryland with her parents as a toddler. After graduating from Seton High School, Arlene married Harry Walther on August 22, 1953 at St. Joseph’s Monastery in Baltimore, MD. She recently celebrated a quiet and happy 67th wedding anniversary with her adoring husband. Arlene was a consummate homemaker, loving wife and devoted mother to her two sons. Her family first lived in a quiet little house on Brook Rd in Catonsville and in 1970 moved to Mt. Hebron, an idyllic neighborhood in Ellicott City. There, she proudly watched her son’s successes as they graduated and ventured out and then joyfully welcomed her grandchildren and watched them grow up. Arlene most recently resided at Charlestown Retirement Community however, her heart forever longed for Ellicott City. Arlene and her husband in their retirement years enjoyed cruising, many times with dear friends. A wonderful cook, she was known for her amazing sour beef and dumpling recipe, French Silk pies and paper-thin sugar cookies. Arlene is survived by her husband, Harry; sons Gregory and Douglas Walther; grandchildren Ashley and Martin Walther; niece, Kristin DeVries and nephew Chad DeVries; and many Schaefer cousins. She is predeceased by her sister Audrey (Schaefer) DeVries. A Memorial Mass will be held at The Church of the Resurrection, 3175 Paulskirk Drive, Ellicott City, MD 21042 on Saturday September 26, 2020 at 11:00 am. The family will receive family and friends in the Church vestibule prior to the Memorial Mass beginning at 10:00 am. Interment of Ashes will be at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens, 2150 Mt. View Road, Marriottsville, MD 21104 at 12:30 pm.
