Adele Blaine Free

July 26, 1929 — July 10, 2021

Adele Blaine Free, days away from her 92nd birthday, shuffled off this mortal coil on Saturday, July 10, 2021 after a period of declining health. Her four loving children, Doug, Tom, Marcie and Blaine were all able to spend time with her in the days leading up to her death. Adele was born in Washington DC to the late Walter and Adele Free. The family moved to Bronxville, NY where Adele was joined by her beloved younger sisters Patricia (O'Connor) and Blaine (Foltz). Adele attended Georgetown University, then became a buckeye, attending Ohio State University where she was a Kappa Kappa Gamma and studied Occupational Therapy. Upon graduation, she took a job at the University of Maryland where she met the handsome (late) Richard B. Hornick whom she married and with whom she raised their four children. Adele later went back to school to get her master's degree in social work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work, a vocation she practiced for many years working with troubled youths and families. She devoted herself to helping others beyond her career by volunteering at different agencies including Listening Hearts Ministries and Health Care for the Homeless supporting AIDS patients. She was an active member of Memorial Episcopal Church in Bolton Hill (where she met her second husband, Bud), then furthered her spiritual interests at Holy Comforter Church in Lutherville and Immanuel Church in Glencoe. She was a strong advocate for women's rights and believed fervently in treating all people fairly and with respect. Adele challenged herself by taking up the cello later in life having played the piano for years, and she pursued her passion for literature, music and art by taking classes and traveling, acting as a docent at the museum, reading and studying Faulkner and other great writers. She loved seeing live artists, plays and musicals in and around Baltimore, New York and beyond. She was immensely proud of her children, their interests, and families. She married the late Joseph Booze ("Bud") in 1988 with whom she spent time traveling, sailing, playing golf and otherwise having fun. She played tennis, gardened, enjoyed taking walks with her beloved corgis Casey, Hubble, Jesse and her favorite Charlotte. She is survived by her four children Doug (Leigh), Tom (Sonia), Marcie, Blaine (Peter Hawley) and her sisters Pat ("Tissie") and Blaine. Adele also leaves behind grandchildren Emma (Alejandro), Andrew, Jack (Amber), Mike, Katie, Addie and Mallan; great grandchildren Andrew and Daniel Pezzulo, as well as loving nieces and nephews Rick, Pattie, Anne, John, Lisa and Becca. The family is especially grateful for the care provided by the staff at Broadmead- she had a many great years there. A memorial service/ celebration of Mom's life will be held at Immanuel Church, Glencoe, Maryland on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at 10 am with the Reverend Megan E. Stewart-Sicking presiding.
